Kristine Hedley, a current BA student from IDI, enjoyed her Historic Preservation class so much that when it came time for an internship she decided a firm specializing in this field might be of interest.

As luck would have it her instructor, Paul Rice, had a contact in Long Beach that specialized in the field of Historic Preservation. Kristine followed up on the lead contacting the firm of Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architects. The timing could not have been better as the firm just happened to be in need of an intern. On board as an intern, Kristine quickly discovered she could apply her design education, along with her class knowledge in historic preservation, to make the most of her internship.

Projects at Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architects included preservation and restoration of historically significant buildings, and Kristine interned working in their interiors department. And, her immediate supervisor was yet another IDI graduate, Kristin Pipal, who she assisted in developing interior drawings, designs as well as selecting historically appropriate materials on various projects. As Kristine’s internship neared its completion, the principle of the firm was so impressed with Kristine’s abilities she was taken on as a permanent employee.

One never knows what opportunities an internship may provide, but it is clear that when a student follows their interests, anything is possible!
